Costs of Private Practice

This section outlines some of the costs involved with Private Medical practice and the way it is organised. This can affect patients with medical insurance as well as those who fund themselves.

Consultants working in Private Practice are not employed by the medical insurance companies or the private hospitals, but operate independently.
For simple consultations the only fee is that charged by the consultant. For Victoria Cook, these fees are £180 for an initial consultation and £120 for any follow-up.
However, if the consultation includes any medical procedure, the private hospital will change an additional sum for this to cover nursing support and any items used during the procedure. These charges will be invoiced directly by the private hospital and are not under the control of the consultant.
For operative procedures, the consultant will charge an amount depending on the procedure usually between around £150 and £800 in Victoria Cook's practice. This sum covers the consultant surgeon and any assistant and any subsequent follow-up visits during the patients stay in hospital. However, additional charges will be incurred and invoiced separately by the anaesthetist and by the private hospital to cover nursing, use of theatre and any in-patient hotel costs. Generally the private hospital charges will form the major part of the total cost of any procedure.
